January/February 2012 Clubs, Classes and Sessions After School

Challenges! Choose a Team Challenge and Game for each session. (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 4:15 sessions - 2/week limit)
Boats! Design multi-fueled boats to test in the POD Test Pond! (Mondays and/or Thursdays at 4:15)
Quick-Cook Fun! Create recipe cards for microwave, stovetop and oven delights! Fast to make and fun to share. (Tuesdays at 4:15)
Fly Fishing Club - Casting, tying flies, learning about local sports fishing and going on field trips to try it all out! (Wednesdays at 3:30-5:00)
Think Tank - Everyone gets a say at POD! Share ideas and plan classes, events and more for POD. All students are asked to join in during these open sessions. (Select Wednesdays 3:30-4:00)
Life-Wise Cooking - at the CHS Home Ec room - have fun cooking and learning about healthy choices! (Wednesdays at 3:30-5:00 on Early Release, or 4:15 for regular days)
Discovery Dance Studio - explore many dance styles in a friendly, lively format! (Thursdays at 4:15)

About Project Open Door (POD)

21st Century Community Learning Center Program: Project Open Door (POD) was originally funded through a three year 21st Century Community Learning Center grant in 1998. In 2007 Project Open Door was again awarded a 21st Century CLC grant for a 5 year period that ends June 30th of 2012. Local funding,district levy funds, small grants and private donations in addition to 21stCCLC grants have kept the "doors open" for students at Henkle during non-school hours for the last 13 years.

The program is staffed by highly qualified para-professional and certified teaching staff, most of whom work in HMS classrooms during the school day. This is a conscious strategy to ensure that school-day learning of classroom curriculum and State Academic Standards is enhanced after school.

Daily Study Halls include a system of activities, games and interventions to focus on improving skills as well as more traditional homework help. "Math Whizz" is an online math tutoring program available for eligible students after school, as is participation in "Read Naturally", another strong Academic Intervention.

Activities are designed to be interesting and engaging for middle school students. A 4-6 week calendar is prepared, and students are encouraged to enroll in sessions or classes that occur regularly throughout the calendar period in addition to attending daily study halls. A varied selection is available to encourage students to "try out" many types of enrichment activities. Academic standards are routinely included in POD enrichments through hands-on, engaging activities.

At least quarterly, POD hosts Family Dinner Nights where students share their accomplishments with their families. Each event also provides parent information and training on strategies and skills to assist student growth. They also serve as forums to families to share ideas for additional parent classes, discussion topics and needs.
